CODE 13/DS 13
SPLIT
HC7023 (2000)
More info about this item

13 songs of fast hardcore action from Sweden and Minnesota. Each band does six and one half songs. DS 13 plays fast paced 80's influenced hardcore while Code 13 plays fast paced 80's influenced hardcore. In fact you couldn't pick two more complimentary bands to share a 7". This was the last recorded material from Code 13 and saw the band drop the crust/grind influence completely in favor of straight ahead hardcore thrash. This remains one of the most popular records in our catalog even though both bands are now broken up.

CODE 13
DISCOGRAPHY CD
HC5001 (2000)
More info about this item

This was the first CD release for Havoc and marked the beginning of a new phase for the label. Prior to 2000 I had envisioned the label as being small scale, doing a few 7"s a year. In 2000-2001 things really started to look up in the hardcore scene. There were lots of new bands and lots of the older labels had faded away or weren't interested in the new sounds. I decided to move into full lenths and use the experience of the first 8 years to really expand the label. The first step was this CD. 50 tracks from Minneapolis HC/Punk ragers Code 13. All the 7"s, comp tracks and one unreleased song, the entire studio output 1994-2000. While most of this material is still available on vinyl this release collects it all in one place for convenience and for those who don't collect vinyl.

CODE 13
A PART OF AMERICA DIED TODAY
HC7016 (1998)
More info about this item

After several tours across America Code 13 suffered its first major line-up change when drummer Criminal Shane was arrested and incarcerated in Wisconsin. Josh from the band Inveigh was recruited to fill in and would end up staying with the band for a year, two tours and a 7". Fast powerful hardcore, period. Over the years Code 13 became part of a burgeoning scene in Minneapolis, along with bands like Civil Disobecience, State of Fear, Misery, Murderers and Assrash. To show our appreciation to the kids who supported us we did 100 copies on clear vinyl with a screenprinted camouflage cover for our record release show. Of the three 7"s most people consider this to be Code 13's strongest material. The grind/crust influence had faded somewhat by this point and the approach more of a fast hardcore style. Some reviewers had a hard time with the mix of styles, that Code 13 couldn't easily be nailed down as crust, thrash, or street punk. But it was our goal from the start to mix up styles and still have drive an energy.

CODE 13
THEY MADE A WASTELAND AND CALLED IT PEACE
HC7008 (1995)
More info about this item

Coming hot on the heels of the Doomed Society EP They Made a Wasteland is sort of a State of the Scene Address from the hardcore underground. A breathless report from the front as hardcore experienced a massive explosion of popularity and renewed interest as well as an assault of commercialism and regressive attitudes. Larger political issues to a back seat to confronting poseurs, sell-outs and religious extremists trying to corrupt the true spirit of hardcore. The line-up is the same as the first 7" although we had two different second guitar players around this time neither stuck with us. Musically very similar to the first 7" fast paced straight ahead hardcore with a variety of influences. Hardcore for the Kids and Shady Acres are downright melodic in the old California 80's style while Armed to the Teeth is total grindcore and the rest are punk thrashers.

CODE 13
DOOMED SOCIETY
HC7005 (1995)
More info about this item

After Destroy broke up I hooked up with Tattoo Shane and Trevor Trend and began jamming with a series of Drummers. We put up an ad at Extreme Noise and attracted Criminal Shane on Drums. Code 13 was an attempt on my part to move past the grind and metal influence on Destroy back to a more old school hardcore sound. Still, Code 13 is not a retro-80's band by any respect, although the 80's influence is there, many of our songs clock in at speeds undreamed of in '82. Code 13's music is hard for me to describe because we mix several different styles. I'm not saying we're particularly original or groundbreaking, but our music was far from generic as well. Simply put, we didn't all listen to just one style of music so our playing wasn't rigidly influenced by one style either. We mixed sing-a-long 80's hardcore like early 7 Seconds and Youth Brigade with fast-core like Drop Dead and a touch of early DRI, Straight Edge Hardcore, Swedish HC/ Japanese Thrash, 80's Anarcho-punk and some grind/Powerviolence for a fast and powerful punk sound. Lyrically I'd have to say the individual versus society and issues of social control predominate. The name Code 13 comes from the police radio code for "officer down" and as you can guess our lyrics were heavily anti-police and authority. For a while four out of five of our shows were broken up by the man, but hardcore survives on the underground and so did we. At the time I felt like the hardcore/punk scene was too complacent and needed some really radical thrashing punk to bring band the anger and energy. I went out of my way to write radical, aggressive lyrics to go with the music. We stirred up no small controvery, posing with automatic weapons and singing about shooting cops. One anarchist squat in Paris actually wouldn't let us play because we were "too militant" I knew we were doing something right then.
